Cancun weather and how to prepare for it
Cancun and Riviera Maya has tropical climate with an amazing weather (although, amazing is relative, isn’t it?). That is why it became one of the top beach destinations of America. From all over the world, people arrive here to enjoy the sunshine, the always cool Caribbean Sea, where you can swim practically all around the year (OK, in January, you better wear snorkel suit not to get too cold).
Let’s see what we mean on “amazing weather”:
Sunshine: approx. 300 day a year (hmmm, worth to think twice if you just want to go for a beach holiday or you prefer move there).
Temperature: the average daily temperature in Cancun is between 23 ° -30 ° C (equals to 74 ° to 86 ° F).
The hottest period is from May to August.
Rain: the months when it rains most are June, September and October.
The humidity is around 80% always!
Behind the statistics, here is a short review to see how a year passes at the Mexican Caribbean (mainly for travellers from Continental or Mediterranean climate to help prepare adequate cloths in the luggage):
December, January and February – the continental winter on the Northern part of our Planet – is cool at this part of the Caribbean. During the day, when the sun is shining, you can without any doubt, enjoy the beach! On the other side, you will adore the tours, as the sun still not too hot to make you sweat while walking through the ancient Mayan paths or playing golf at the high quality course. At night be aware of the outside activities, you might need a thick sweater or a thin jacket, coat to avoid getting an undesirable cold. During the day, you can wear shorts, T-shirts or longer but thin trousers, even jeans. Funny to see for travellers arriving from snow or minus degrees, that local people this time of the year might wear winter coat.
Average temperature: 23 – 24 °C / 73 – 75 °F
Average Sea temperature: 26 °C / 79 °F
March, April and May represent also the flourishing spring, however, the temperature is like summer by the Mediterranean Sea! Highly recommended for those, who love the spring feeling with surely high temperature! You can stay on the beach all day, refresh in the Sea, join any aquatic activities and still great for any of our ecotours or Mayan site visit. You will see the trees and flowers blooming, filling up with lots of colour the streets in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and the nature outside of the cities!
Average temperature: 25 – 27 °C / 77 – 81 °F
Average Sea temperature: 28 °C / 82 °F
The Caribbean summer is really hot! June, July, August is for those who adore, admire (and can tolerate) the high temperature, even at night! Sometimes, you enter to luxury malls just to take a breath of the Air conditioned 20 degree air. Just bring your swimming wear! The only thing you might be prepared that the contrast between the hot outside and the cold (Air condition) in hotels, shopping malls, airport and bus station is very significant! So, better be prepared always with a thin sweater in your bag in case you go out for a trip / shopping time / or you enter your hotel.
At the beginning of June is when the rainy and hurricane seasons start that ends officially 30th of November. In June, do not forget your raincoat, you might enjoy a rainy day in Cancun.
Average temperature: 28 °C / 82 °F
Average Sea temperature: 29 °C / 84 °F
September, October and November is when the temperature gets cooler, the wind brings cool or relatively cold air for short periods. This time of the year is really enjoyable at the beach, as it is the lowest tourist season. However, the sun during the day is still hot! In Cancun or at the Riviera Maya you can forget about the grey and autumn colours usually you can see in larger cities. By the Caribbean, you can enjoy the turquoise, blue and green, the white sand and the evergreen tropical jungle, not even mentioning the so living typical Mexican colours that keep your heart warm while you are in Mexico! So, we recommend late summer cloths and one pair of closed shoes in case it starts to rain.
